Some of my mosaics are more fun than serious, some are more real than expressionistic. Being able to move freely between themes is a skill that adds artistic distinction to my work. Ultimately each mosaic is about challenge and risk. The challenge is to create art that will endure for civilizations to come. The risk is wasting valuable materials on irreversible poor choices. Currently the process for making the mosaics involves three artisans working in harmony. Amy Gernhardt creates handmade and custom glazed tiles. Tony Silveira creates substrates and beautiful wooden framework. I design, make and grout the one of a kind mosaic. BACKGROUND V. Bretl earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University, and pursued professional modern dance and choreography for several years before becoming assistant administrator of the New York City Art Commission. In 1999 she returned to an early passion for mosaic art, and in 2004 established her studio in Cedar Key, FL. She has been given grants from the National Endowment for the Arts as well as awards at juried art shows, has been hosted in one-woman shows and in A member of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, V. Bretl is an active participant in the growing community of mosaic artists, and will be opening Mosaic Works, a gallery featuring her work in Bristol, RI. The preview season is June through September, 2009 and the gallery will be open Friday Saturday and Sunday 12:00 to 6:00 pm or by appointment. PRICES Prices for the mosaics of V. Bretl range from $500 to $2,000 for small, $3,000 to $5,000 for medium and $6,000 to $10,000 for large. |
