ARTIST STATEMENT                                                                    Home

I see mosaic art as a livewire in the midst of other mediums. Its tactile qualities and reference to ancient art inspire me. Rather than imitate classic styles, I shape materials to fit my designs like puzzle pieces formed with modern nippers. I am driven by the intrigue of seeing the end result of my process, hoping it conveys a whisper of age old aesthetics and a seasoning of my contemporary style.

I recall the song lyric, “everything is made to be broken” and accept the fascinating role of putting broken pieces together into mosaics that combine the real with the imaginary. I work from the nucleus of the mosaic outward, focusing my technique on organic curves and making design choices based on depth and motion. My favorite materials are tiles from Portugal, marble tiles and artist-made stoneware tiles. These all share the quality of enduring extreme age, which adds to my sense of accomplishment in the medium.

My ideas come from my surroundings. I watch shore birds, glimmering trees and people amidst nature. These are my themes and I constantly move between them to stay inspired. My aspiration is to let my imagination run with the themes toward an acute expression that resonates with others.
